Mixing Prints

- outfit details -
sweater || Target (also styled here)
tee || Target
pants || H&M
booties || Target
bag || Steve Madden (via Ross)
earrings || Stella & Dot
necklace || Forever 21

If you follow my blog regularly, you'll recognize that sweater from this post last month. I've found myself reaching for it A LOT over the past couple weeks! It's comfortable, a great layering piece (I love both the longer length & the lightweight material), has a fun print that surprisingly can be styled many ways, etc. Usually when putting an outfit together, I take a "classic" approach, however I was feeling a bit eclectic with this particular outfit and was happy with the final result. The blue tee and green earrings provide great pops of color against the neutral grays, and the unexpected pairing of "tribal" print with leopard print surprisingly just works (at least to me! lol).

I've always considered leopard print to be a neutral in terms of color, but as of late, I'm also considering it to be as neutral of a print as stripes. Keep in mind that mixing prints has a lot to do with proportions - I think part of the reason the prints in this particular outfit work together is because the leopard print is kept to a minimum in being restricted to the shoe area, while the tribal print covers the focal point of the outfit, the sweater. Plus, there's a solid color pant giving some space between the two prints which prevents the mixing of the prints from looking chaotic!

Which particular prints do YOU like pairing together? Have any suggestions on a pairing I should try? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks for stopping by! :)

Tribal Print

- outfit details -
top || Forever 21
denim jacket || JCPenney
pants || Forever 21
heels || Windsor (similar)
hand jewelry || Forever 21
nail color || Essie "Ballet Slippers"

When it comes to prints, you can never go wrong with the classics (my go-to prints are usually stripes, plaids, polka dots, etc.), but every once in a while it's fun to mix things up! I wore these tribal-print pants for one of my outfits during my band's album release concert back in October and have worn them several times since. They're a cross between a lightweight trouser and a harem-style pant - super comfortable!

How do you feel about tribal prints? How would you style these pants? I'd love to hear your feedback! Thanks for stopping by!

Hat + Scarf {winter accessories}

- outfit details -
sweater || H&M
jeans || Forever 21(old, also styled here)
coat || Macy's (old)
booties || Target
bag || Phillip Lim for Target
scarf || H&M
hat || Target (also styled here)
rings || Forever 21

We've had the strangest weather in January! For Oklahoma though, it really can't be considered that strange. During the week we'll have temps in the low 30s and then the weekends will spike up to the low 60s! (We woke up to snow the other day, though these particular photos were taken from a snow day back in December.) The best way I know how to keep up with the constant fluctuating Oklahoma temperatures is to dress in layers and add on accessories. When I intentionally want to add warmth to an outfit, I always go for a hat and scarf. I'm still loving this floppy hat that I first tried out earlier in the fall. I plan to transition it into spring as well! This scarf has also been a go-to for me lately. I can wear it with pretty much any color, though I particular love the way it compliments* the mustard sweater in this outfit.

*style tip || Pair a solid color sweater/top with a printed scarf that incorporates the same color to create a polished, pulled together look.

As always, I appreciate you stopping by and hope these outfits continue to provide you with some inspiration in creating your own!

Boho Chic

- outfit details* -
sweater || Target
tee || Target
jeans || Forever 21
booties || Target
belt || Forever 21
bag || Steve Madden (via Ross)
necklace || Forever 21
(*most of these items were purchased more than a few months ago & no longer available online)

This is my take on "boho chic" or "hippie" or whatever you want to call this style. I normally pair longer, open sweaters with leggings or skinnies, but pairing this particular sweater with flared jeans gave this look a totally different vibe - carefree, free-flowing, etc. I remember wearing this outfit to run errands and feeling super comfortable in it, yet I still felt like the overall look had a sense of chic-ness to it. So the next time you're wearing an open sweater and start to reach for your leggings or skinny jeans, consider reaching for your flared denim instead and mix things up with some "70s chic!"

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend!

Black, Head-to-Toe

- outfit details -
top || Target (older)
leggings || Charlotte Russe
flats || Target
head wrap || Charlotte Russe
bag || Phillip Lim for Target
sunglasses || Forever 21

Black, head-to-toe, is my go-to look on any given day that I'm in a hurry or just not feeling very creative in outfit designing. Fortunately, it's a classic, chic look that can be uniquely styled through accessories, like the feather-print head wrap & camo-print flats I incorporated in the outfit above.

On a sidenote, my band's (Warr Acres) new album "Hope Will Rise" - releases exactly one week from today! I'm encouraging everyone I know to pre-order the physical album at the discounted price of $10 before Oct. 29th when the album releases & the price goes up. You can also pre-order on iTunes! You can check out the live video recording of the title track "Hope Will Rise" here.

Thanks for stopping by! Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Studded Ankle Boots

- outfit details -
top || H&M
jeans || Target (old)
ankle boots || Target (recent)
messenger clutch || Francesca's Collections (old)
statement ring || Forever 21
cuff || Target
nails || Revlon ColorStay

With the exception of some brown lace-up combat-style boots, the boots pictured above are the only other "flat" ankle boots that I own. I used to shy away from ankle boots completely because I didn't think they were flattering on the shorter legs that come with my 5' 3" frame. While I've gotten more comfortable with high-heeled ankle boots, I still find myself having reservations with the flat versions (and yes, I realize the boots pictured above have like a one-inch heel, but in my world that may as well be considered a flat ;) ).

One key I've found to make flat ankle boots work - or at least make me more comfortable in them - is to wear the same color of pants/jeans as the color of the ankle boots. This creates an "illusion" of a longer leg. Another key is being mindful of proportions. For example, in retrospect, I should have worn a shorter top that hit closer to my waist than the middle of my thighs - this would have also contributed to the illusion of a longer leg.

Any other shorter girls out there have tricks to making flats and ankle-boots work well on our frames? I'd love to hear your tips!

And just to clarify... I'm perfectly content with the 5' 3" frame the Lord gave me :) - for me personally, the whole point of creating a "flattering" look is to avoid the opposite - a distracting one!

Thanks so much for stopping by! Have a blessed day!

Blue Gingham + White Denim

- photo details -
photographer || Reed Ewing
location || Ocean Maya Royale (Playa Del Carmen, Mexico)
occasion || honeymoon dinner #4 (May '13)

- outfit details -
top || Old Navy (similar)
shorts || Old Navy
heels || Charlotte Russe
necklace || Charlotte Russe (similar)
cuff || BCBGeneration
bag || Francesca's Collections
This outfit is probably my favorite from the whole honeymoon because it involves several of my favorite summer fashion elements...

  • Blue is by far my favorite color! I'm drawn to all different shades, but royal blue usually catches my eye the most & seems to compliment my hair & skin tone the best. Needless to say, the blue cuff that has been appearing all over my honeymoon outfit posts (seen also here & here) is one of my favorite accessories - so versatile!
  • Statement necklaces are definitely my necklace of choice (I just don't feel like I pull off "dainty" jewelry very well). I love the pop of color on this coral one I picked up at Charlotte Russe a while back. Normally I'll wear statement necklaces on the outside of collared shirts, but to keep with the casual feel of this look, I wore it "underneath." Even a statement necklace can appear more understated when styled in a certain way.
  • White denim = summer. Shorts, jeans, dresses, etc. - I love wearing white. It goes with everything & brings such a freshness & crispness to any look.
  • Gingham is such a great print that works on pretty much everyone in my opinion (Reed has a blue gingham shirt just like mine and I LOVE how it looks on him!). It works great with both solids & mixing with other prints. Also, wearing white with gingham will definitely make the print pop even more.
  • Heels. Obviously I'm a fan :). I realize with the casual nature of the pieces I chose for this outfit that most people would opt for flats, but I couldn't resist wearing my favorite heels of the moment, especially with how great they tied in with the statement necklace. Also, with my shorter frame (5' 3"), I just feel better in heels when I'm wearing shorts.
side note ||  The bag in this post is actually the white clutch that has appeared in previous posts this week (here & here), only in this post it's pictured with the added strap.

Thanks for stopping by! I'd love to hear your feedback! Have a fabulous Friday!
